Laneway Learning

Last night I was one of the lucky few to secure a ticket to Hello Wholefoods! (in four easy recipes) with Kelly Gibney from Bonnie Delicious. Lucky because the latest class from Laneway Learning Auckland was sold out.

Hosted at Alleluya Bar & Cafe in the open atrium in St Kevin’s Arcade, K’Rd you really do get up close and personal – it’s not very often you get to sit a metre or so away from the presenter.

On a crisp Auckland evening, the chilly air was just the excuse needed for a warming glass of red wine. Once the convivial chatter subsided, Kelly walked us through four of her ‘go to’ real food recipes in her makeshift kitchen.

Currently renting, Kelly had borrowed kitchen gadgets, bowls and utensils for the night and reminded us that “you really can make do with what you have”.  The exception – nothing slices finer than a mandolin which she couldn't go without.  Lidded jars make great salad dressing shakers, glass tumblers ideal measuring cups and the back of a knife works perfectly fine for teaspoons of spice – although there was little accurate measuring going on during the class – it’s all about taste it, tweak it and taste it again.  Thankfully for the less confident cooks amongst us our take home recipes had measurements.

The evening was the start of a wonderful conversation about embracing delicious and nourishing wholefoods using accessible ingredients.  Generous tasting plates were quickly devoured, the atrium buzzed with our loud murmurings of satisfaction and delight.

A first timer at a Laneway Learning class, the informal friendly atmosphere made it a relaxing Tuesday night out. “Cheap, fun classes in anything and everything” from hula-hooping to perfecting a cup of coffee to how to make your own movie, there’s no doubt that upcoming Laneway Learning classes will sell out too.
